More on the conference

The second day at the conference. Hereby a photo of the conference center in Cartagena. It is located with on the right side the historic city (see next photo), behind it the Atlantic ocean and on the other side one of the oldest theatres in Colombia (see photo below).

In this nicely situated Cartagena conference center about 400 students and teachers of SENA followed presentations on applied research projects in biotechnology. One of the presentations I attended this morning was on finding solutions for diseases affecting the trees for avocados; in the region they studied this sometimes destroys 80 % of the harvest. The presentations were high quality and caused lively discussions among the audience.

For the food lovers among you, my lunch today was in the "Crepes & Waffles", a Colombian chain of a female chef who - after doing an internship in Paris - blended the European and Colombian foods in healthy foods. Her restaurants only employ women and most of them are single mothers. Next to offering her clients wonderful food, she is also making a difference to combat gender inequality...

After this delicious broccoli soup and brie crepe, it was back to the working group of applied research on treatment of water polluted by mercury from the small scale mining communities....
