The past week the small city of Welland (45,000 people) was the proud host of a sport I did not know existed: canoe polo. The world championship took place in Canada this year and the wonderful site in the Welland canal was chosen by the ICF (International Canoe Federation). Niagara College was one of the local sponsors.
The site has been built for events such as rowing, kayaking and dragon boat races and was the host of some of these events in 2017 during the Pan Am Games. This was another nice event. Four courts were built near the tower and men & women teams from twenty countries participated. Mostly teams from Europe and the Americas but also a team from Namibia and from Iran.
Just like in Water Polo these teams get pretty rough with each other in their small canoes and it is very entertaining to watch. Yesterday we got to cheer the two teams from the Netherlands who both battled for 5th place against the men & women teams of New Zealand. The Kiwis beat the men and women in orange in both games, but the Dutch ladies were quite happy with the end result...
