Last night my dear friends Marijke and Rob (see Oct 21 "friends for life" post) hosted another dinner and organized that my high school girlfriend Ineke was there as well. The four of us spend good times together during the start of our higher education (1975 -1977). We drove to the south of France during the summer breaks of 1976 and 1977 using the provincial routes rather than the "peages" (toll routes). Ineke had a Citroen 2CV ("deux chevaux" or in Dutch "lelijke eend" - "ugly duck") and Rob & Marijke had a Renault R4. We stopped on the way to camp, eat and drink wine. In the south we stayed once in the "Camarque" and camped on a seemingly endless beach near Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer along the Mediterranean Sea (where the Rhone River meets that large waterbody forming a unique natural reserve region. It was permitted camping but there were zero facilities, so the seawater and the dunes were what we had. When you are that age, anything goes for that price....; sweet memories. And last night was a fun night of bringing up shared memories as well as updates on our individual lives. Ineke became a successful veterinarian, married a colleague vet and together they have three daughters who are all young professionals (an MD, a Vet and a physiotherapist). Rob and Marijke adopted two babies from Colombia of whom the oldest - their daughter - is an MD and the younger one - their son - a social worker. And together we reflected forward a bit towards the times ahead of us all....
