Amsterdam

Yesterday I took the train to Amsterdam. Along the way - in the city area called the "Bijlmer" - we passed the Atlas office building where I worked from 1984 to 1988 while working for Fokker Aircraft. I lived in downtown Amsterdam and took the "Metro" city rail to these offices. Four years without a car. The train station is called "Bijlmer ArenA"; named partly after the soccer club AJAX's stadium, the ARENA. Enjoyed several games there, once with Mark when he was 12 and went with me to Holland for a visit and to attend the wedding of one of his Dutch family members.

One of my university friends lives in this house built following the "Amsterdamse School" architectural philosophy of the sixties. Their backyard borders one of the many "grachten", the canal system of the city. Age and Lea have a fantastic location here...

These canals are in a part of the city called "Oud Zuid". Many small boat owners are allowed to leave their small boats in the water (but are advised to take them out during the winter months when the canals do freeze up during a few weeks (January-February period). In Holland there is no recycling pick up services by the municipality; instead, the city has everywhere recycling containers where citizens are encouraged to deposit glass, carton and other recyclables.

Mostly smaller - compact - cars here in the city (as well much throughout European countries), but you can also see luxury cars as old model Jaguars. Quite a few electrical cars already and loading stations in streets throughout the city. I noticed three of them in one street block.

All payments have to be made electronically through bankpasses. That system allows for apps with messaging. The red sticker in the photo above, tells the users that it will send them a message when the loading station is available after the user finds it busy when first hoping to load their car. Next to all this high tech, it is always fun to see the simple "playground" below (likely just an individual in the street without a personal backyard who placed it there....).

And a blog post on Amsterdam without a few pics of Dutch bicycles cannot be complete. The photo above and the ones below are made in one city block....; all sizes and many, many electric and electric assisted (this seems to have been a craze here in the city). For foreigners the cyclists were already always a thing to watch out for, but with the new fast electric bikes (with no sound) it was even for me reason for some additional caution when crossing streets and street corners....

Older men once young

Once upon a time these guys started their studies at the Delft University of Technology and their social activities bound them together for life. It was 48 years ago when these friendships started and yesterday, we got together for a lunch at the beach of Scheveningen. We were lucky with the weather. Initially this group was 14; two passed away; three were in South Africa, Italy and France; one was late; that left the nine of us on this photo. The beach area was busy with folks enjoying the nice fall weather....

Paying for parking took two engineers (but one of them lives in Mexico, so ....). We were early and enjoyed a nice walk on the beach before lunch.

Going to places in this small country with well-organized train connections is a good reminder in how this is possible in a geographical small country with dense population.

Family family

My two sisters and Hanneke's dog (called "wifi"). We had a wonderful Chinese-Indonesian meal grace to the birthday of Ger (78). Her husband recently had his 80th birthday and two of his old school friends gave him a puzzle of the three of them at their "brommers" (small motorcycles which youth in Holland are allowed to drive at the age of 16 - drivers licenses for cars can only be obtained as of 18) ....

The same day - six time zones to the west - Mary, Mark and Carly attended a wedding party of one of Mark's school friends. They looked good!!

Birthday sister Ger

Today was the 78th birthday of my sister Ger. Han and I went together, and it has been a while since I was able to attend a birthday like this in Holland. Ger's husband Bert had recently his 80th birthday.

Their oldest daughter Monique (51) visited with her partner Marco and gave her mother a nice family photo (taken during Bert's recent birthday party). Monique and Marco have taken Ger & Bert earlier this year for a two-week trip to Botswana....
Monique and Marco have four kids between the two of them (ages 11-15); still a very busy gang...
The three kids of Ger and Bert each have three kids. Nice to see quite a few of them these weeks....

Classic Dutch

A friend of Hanneke is letting me use one of her old bikes. It was originally a bicycle for a local police person. Her father purchased it once the police force auctioned old equipment. This bike has more years than I have....

Only one gear and the brake is the backpedal move. Today was a rainy day, so I only did a bit of cycling in the town of Soest (population about 16,000). During a better weather day, I will bike to Bilthoven which is the nearby town where I grew up. About 7 kilometers from Soest. I will have a dinner there on November 4 with four classmates from high school (1968 - 1974). Have not seen them since 2004, the year my mother passed away. One of them I have not seen since 1974 - 48 years ago....

Family in Holland

My sister Han with two of her grandchildren; Joelle (20) and Noah (12), kids from Han's son Patrick. They stopped by this afternoon to say hello.
Lunch today: "lekkerbekjes". Last night dinner: Dutch version of the "Chinees" (forgot to make photo but we had enough to have dinner from it again tonight....). And Han's dog "Wifi".

Visit to Holland

Back in Holland for five weeks! I had planned this visit shortly after stopping with work in June 2020 but then the COVID pandemic caused cancelation. But now it was a good moment. I arrived yesterday and my "home base" these weeks is a small guest suite in the apartment building where my sister Hanneke lives. This morning I bought some seasonal flowers for her as thanks for the arrangement. Han is a very artful person......; see where she placed the flowers....

In front of the apartment building, they have each Thursday a typical fresh fish stall. Opa Vandenboom would LOVE this. Other weekdays there is a fresh bakery cart or fresh vegetable stalls. And that in front of a very large supermarket + a very good Chinese restaurant. Han has it all here....
The suite is a simple but comfortable "home away from home" for these weeks.....
Busy now making appointments to meet other family members and a variety of old friends from high school and university, as well as a few former colleagues from work at Fokker Aircraft and Doctors without Borders Holland. I will make new posts every now and then during the coming weeks...
